Indian professionals considering employment in New Zealand now have two new visa options under the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which took effect on 20 October 2026. These routes cover specified technical professions and a smaller group of occupations associated with Indian cultural expertise.

There is an important difference between a visa opportunity and a job vacancy. The agreement permits up to 5,000 visa holders across the two categories at any one time. It does not mean 5,000 employers are currently recruiting. Applicants still need a qualifying offer, the right credentials and immigration approval.

This guide explains which occupations qualify, how the visa rules work and what Indian applicants should check before paying for assessments or preparing an application.

What Changed Under the India–New Zealand FTA in 2026?

The agreement introduced two temporary employment categories: the India Skilled Work Visa and the India Iconic Work Visa. The first is intended for specified professional occupations, including engineering, information technology, teaching and healthcare. The second covers eligible Indian chefs, yoga instructors, music teachers and AYUSH practitioners.

The arrangement has an overall limit of 5,000 visa holders in New Zealand at any one time: up to 4,400 under the Skilled Work category and 600 under the Iconic Work category. Both visas are temporary and do not provide a residence pathway in themselves.

The FTA also includes future working holiday arrangements and changes affecting some Indian graduates. These provisions have different start dates, so applicants should not treat every announcement as a visa they can apply for immediately. See the official Immigration New Zealand announcement.

What Are the New Work Visa Options for Indian Citizens?

India Skilled Work Visa

This visa is for Indian citizens offered full-time employment in an approved skilled occupation by an accredited New Zealand employer. The offer must be for at least 30 hours per week. The applicant must also meet occupation-specific qualification, experience or registration rules, as well as English, health and character requirements.

A successful applicant can work for the employer, in the job and location named on the visa. The maximum stay is three years, although the visa duration depends on the job offer. An applicant must be outside New Zealand when applying for their first visa under this category.

For the precise conditions, use the India Skilled Work Visa page.

India Iconic Work Visa

This visa recognises four occupation groups: yoga instructors, Indian chefs, music teachers and qualifying practitioners of Ayurveda, naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa or homeopathy (AYUSH). Each occupation has its own eligibility rules.

For example, Indian chefs need a recognised tertiary qualification in Indian cuisine involving at least two years of study and two years of relevant experience after qualification. Yoga instructors need at least a recognised bachelor's degree in yoga. AYUSH practitioners face different qualification and experience conditions.

The 600 places are divided among the four occupation groups, rather than being available to every occupation equally. Applicants should check the India Iconic Work Visa rules before assuming they qualify.

Which Jobs Qualify for the India Skilled Work Visa?

The eligible occupations are grouped into six allocations. The numbers below describe maximum visa holders in each group, not advertised vacancies.

Eligible occupation group Maximum visa holders
Software engineers, software and applications programmers, ICT project managers 1,000
Civil, mechanical, structural and environmental engineers 1,000
Construction and building project managers 700
Primary and secondary school teachers 500
Registered nurses 900
Physiotherapists 300
Total 4,400

Matching a job title is only the first check. For instance, software professionals must hold a relevant degree and have at least five years of experience. Registered nurses and physiotherapists require New Zealand professional registration and at least three years of relevant experience. Teachers need New Zealand teacher registration and an appropriate practising certificate.

These examples show why applicants should compare their background with the official occupation requirements instead of relying on a recruitment advertisement.

Who Is Eligible for a New Zealand Work Visa Under the FTA?

Each route has its own rules, but several checks apply to both. Applicants need Indian citizenship, a current full-time offer from an accredited employer, qualifications relevant to an approved occupation, acceptable English language results and evidence that they meet health and character standards.

Employer accreditation: The organisation offering the job must be accredited under New Zealand's Accredited Employer Work Visa policy. An offer from an unverified company is not enough.

Qualification recognition: Some degrees obtained outside New Zealand require an International Qualification Assessment. Regulated professions may need local registration before the visa application.

English language: The Skilled Work Visa accepts an IELTS overall score of at least 6.5 or an approved equivalent. Under the Iconic Work Visa, English thresholds differ: Indian chefs and yoga instructors, for example, may use IELTS scores of at least 5.0 in listening and speaking. Tests must be taken at an accepted test centre, and results must be no more than two years old. Check the official language requirements.

Family members: Applicants cannot include a partner or dependent children in either India-specific visa application. Family members are not eligible for a visa merely because of their relationship to the principal visa holder. Candidates considering relocation with family should investigate separate options before accepting an offer.

How Can Indians Apply for Jobs in New Zealand?

Start with the role, not the visa application. A realistic process looks like this:

  1. Confirm the occupation. Compare your actual duties with the approved list rather than assuming that a similar job title qualifies.
  2. Check credentials. Review degree requirements, experience, English scores and professional registration before spending money.
  3. Find genuine employers. Search employer career pages and established recruitment channels. Verify accreditation and the identity of anyone contacting you.
  4. Prepare a focused CV. Show relevant qualifications, project responsibilities, technical tools, certifications and measurable experience.
  5. Complete employer screening. Expect interviews, document checks and, for some professions, further assessments.
  6. Review the job offer. Check pay, location, hours, duties and contract terms before submitting a visa application.
  7. Apply through the official process. Follow Immigration New Zealand's document and application instructions for the correct visa.

DeltaReco maintains a jobs in New Zealand page where candidates can check recruitment updates. The page currently reports no active New Zealand vacancies, so registration should not be mistaken for a confirmed job offer.

What Documents Should Candidates Prepare?

Requirements differ by profession, but applicants may need a valid Indian passport, photograph, signed employment agreement, job description, qualification certificates, academic transcripts, work-experience evidence, an accepted English test result, and medical and police documentation. Some occupations also require evidence of New Zealand registration or qualification assessment.

Employment claims should be supported by documents that can be checked independently, such as employer letters, salary records or tax certificates. Documents not in English may need certified translations. Completing these checks early can help applicants avoid delays once they receive a genuine offer.

How Much Do the Visas Cost and How Long Can You Stay?

As of 21 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand lists a starting application fee of NZD $1,355 for each India-specific visa category. Applicants may have separate expenses for language tests, medical examinations, document translations, professional registration and qualification assessments. Official processing estimates and fees should be checked again at the time of application.

The combined maximum stay under these visa categories is three years, subject to the job offer and visa conditions. After using the three-year limit, a person must spend at least three years outside New Zealand before qualifying for another India Skilled Work Visa or India Iconic Work Visa.

Neither visa is itself a route to permanent residence. Applicants should not treat a temporary work offer as a guarantee of long-term settlement.

What About Working Holidays and Post-Study Work?

The agreement has a separate commitment to introduce a working holiday scheme for Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 within two years of 20 October 2026. It is expected to offer up to 1,000 places annually and stays of up to 12 months. It is not open under this new arrangement as of 21 October 2026.

Another provision takes effect on 16 November 2026: eligible Indian graduates with New Zealand PhDs will become eligible for post-study work visas of up to four years, compared with the previous three-year period.

These provisions should not be confused with the two employment visa categories introduced on 20 October.

How Can You Avoid Fake New Zealand Job Offers?

A new visa announcement can attract misleading advertising. Be cautious of anyone promising an instant offer, demanding payment to secure employment or claiming they can bypass employer accreditation or immigration checks.

Verify the employer, request the full employment agreement and assess whether the role matches the official occupation list. New Zealand employers cannot charge a worker for a job or pass recruitment costs on to them. Review Immigration New Zealand's scam guidance before transferring money or sharing sensitive documents.

What Should Indian Professionals Do Next?

The new FTA visas may be worth considering for applicants whose qualifications match the approved occupations. The practical priority is to establish eligibility, identify genuine employers and understand the employment conditions before making commitments.

Candidates can follow DeltaReco's New Zealand jobs page for recruitment updates. Employers seeking international hiring support can review DeltaReco's international recruitment services. Visa rules and application requirements should always be confirmed on the official Immigration New Zealand website before applying.
